Energy International Corporation’s Parking and Transportation Division was recently awarded the DAST (Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport) Award by the Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA), under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.
EIC’s Parking and Transportation Divisions received the award at the DAST Awards banquet held at the Dubai World Trade Center in Dubai, UAE on February 26, 2013. The award was given in recognition for EIC’s involvement as a sponsor of the event and as one of the RTA’s strategic partners.
“We would like to thank the RTA for presenting us with this prestigious award,” said Chadi Farran, Project manager for EIC’s Transportation Division. “The RTA has made some incredible improvements to Dubai’s transportation infrastructure and Energy International is proud to have been a part of helping to improve the emirate’s transportation system.”
The DAST Awards were initiated in 2008 by the RTA with support of the Dubai Executive Council. The awards strive to serve as an encouragement and awareness-raising instrument among various segments of the local community with the objective of initiating and actively applying practices to make transportation more sustainable among as many organizations as possible and to generate public awareness.
The RTA points out that the United Arab Emirates has been rapidly witnessing a substantial growth of population and urbanization along with an unprecedented increase in new construction developments and a recent boom in economic development. All of these elements have placed increased pressure on the city’s transportation systems.
The rising demand for the transportation of both people and goods has resulted in increased levels of congestion on UAE roadways resulting in an unacceptable loss of human lives resulting from traffic-related incidents and the posing serious threat to the environment.
The RTA initiated the DAST Award program as part of a long-range comprehensive strategy to address current and future transportation issues and provide a wide range of solutions that will enable the UAE to have an efficient, safe and environmentally sound transportation system.
Energy International Corporation has played an important role in the development of a more sustainable transportation system in Dubai with the design and installation of an electronic fare collection system for the municipality’s rail, bus, taxi and marine taxi services.
DAST Awards are open to applicants from government institutions, private sector companies and public service organizations. Awards and presented in seven categories including; Mobility Management, Transport Safety, Environmental Protection, School Transport, Special Needs, The Media Coverage Award and The Academic Research Award.
The Media Coverage Award, recognizing the media outlet that provided the best coverage of sustainable transportation, and Academic Research Awards for the academic institutions who conducted the best research on the topic, are new for 2013.
